The Popular Uprising in Libya in 2011 and Its Impact on the Political Process

The popular movement that took place in Libya in 2011 played an important role in shaping the main features of Libyan history. Over the previous decades, the ruling regime had failed to establish political structures and systems capable of meeting the demands of the people. Therefore, when popular uprising spread across the Arab countries, Libya was influenced by them due to the oppression experienced by the Libyan people, who saw in these movements an opportunity to liberate themselves from the rule of President Muammar Gaddafi. Libyan demonstrators came out demanding reform in their country, but the path of this uprising took another form, as weapons were used. This required that the rule in Libya, which lasted for (42) years. Consequently, the state entered a challenging phase of rebuilding its institutions and reshaping its political system.
